Ghost’s Tobias Forge says opening for Metallica will be “very special”

Credit: Mikael ErikssonGhost will realize the dream of metal bands the world over when they open for Metallica on a European tour, set to kick off in May. Speaking to Kerrang!, Ghost frontman Tobias Forge, aka Cardinal Copia, says the tour will “be very special.”

“Metallica are one of my favorite bands of all time, so I’ve had to sort of split myself in two,” Forge explains. “One half is the private Tobias Forge. He’s a big fan and has been since he was a kid. He’s a collector of all things Metallica! Then there’s the 37-year-old version of myself: the musician who’s effectively one of their colleagues.”

“We’ve played together in the past, but we’ve never gotten to go out on a night-after-night basis,” he adds. “I was very happy to be asked. I mean, holy s***! Imagine if I’d known that when I went to see them on the Black Album tour. Even my 22-year-old self would’ve — to paraphrase Lars Ulrich — been asking to share those drugs.”

The tour will launch May 1 in Portugal, and will stretch into August.

Before the European run begins, Metallica will play another U.S. leg, kicking off January 18 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They’re also performing at the Chris Cornell tribute concert, held January 16 in Los Angeles.
