ABC/Nicole WilderJack White is now a credited songwriter on an Israeli song called “Toy,” which won the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest.
As The New York Times points out, White’s name is listed as a composer for the song on the website for the Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers in Israel.
“Toy” was written by Doron Medalie and Stave Beger, and recorded by singer Netta. While the song was praised by outlets like The Guardian, which said it “reignited Girl Power for the #MeToo generation,” others have said that it’s chorus sounds like the melody of the guitar riff on the White Stripes anthem “Seven Nation Army.”
Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported last July that Universal Music Group sent the “Toy” composers a letter alleging copyright infringement.
According to The New York Times, the agreement between Universal and the composers that led to White being credited includes a “confidentiality clause,” so neither could provide comment. Netta was also unavailable for comment.
